Adult Sized Quilt

These instructions make a 39-inch by 56-inch quilt. Add more squares if you want it longer or wider.

Quilts for shelters (adult) (link to print directions)

Cut 6 inch squares of fabric- you will need at 70 total (for 7 x 10 squares).

A fat quarter will make 9 squares- plus one if you piece together the leftovers.

So you will need 7-8 fat quarters or 4 half yard pieces of fabric.

Arrange your squares in whatever pattern you like- diagonal rows, around the world, alternating just two colors, etc

Sew your rows and then join the rows together.

Self Binding-

Instead of cutting and sewing on a separate binding, it is sometimes easier to do a self binding.

You need a backing fabric that is at least 3-4 inches bigger than your finished top.

Center the top and batting on the back so there is at least 1 ½ to 2 inches of back extra around all sides of the quilt.

Quilt (or tie) your quilt. Then trim batting even with the edge of the front. Trim backing to 1 /12 to 2 inches bigger than top if there are any areas that are wider than that. Fold the backing edge in twice towards the front of quilt. The second fold should be right at the edge of the top/batting.

Make your corners as neat as you can folding in one side and then the other. Use pins or clips to hold layers together.

Sew through all the layers from the front along the folded edge of the back. An undulating or other decorative stitch works well to make it less obvious if you don’t always get the stitching exactly the same distance from edge.
